The God-Shaped Brain

The God-Shaped Brain: How Changing Your View of God Transforms Your Life Audio CD – Audiobook, CD, Unabridged
Author: Visit ‘s Timothy R. Jennings Page ID: 1610458362

Review

“Paying attention to the findings of neuroscience is tantamount to paying attention to God’s creation. And doing that leads us―with the proper guide―to God’s story and his intentions for us. Tim Jennings is that proper guide. An experienced healer with a palpable spirit of humility, he takes the reader past the trite, superficial motifs of easy spirituality that clutter our emotional landscapes and grounds you first in the nature of the God of Scripture. He then further explores that in which God grounded the first humans―the body, and namely, the brain. With compelling stories of challenge and transformation, Dr. Jennings deftly weaves together a deeply thoughtful theology of the living Word with the complex nature of the organ that our heart calls home. Read this book to know God more fully. Read this book to know your brain more fully. And see how knowing God will change your brain―and your life―in ways you never thought possible.” (Curt Thompson, M.D., psychiatrist and author of Anatomy of the Soul)

“With amazing clarity, Dr. Jennings cuts through the many divergent God constructs to expose the powerful impact these differing views have upon our brains and bodies. Not everything taught about God is healthy―read this book and learn how your belief about God is changing you.” (Gregory L. Jantz, Ph.D., C.E.D.S., founder, The Center, Inc.)

“What makes this book truly remarkable is the artful way Dr. Jennings combines the latest understanding in brain physiology with practical and compelling real-life stories. Although this book is easy to understand for the layperson, the implications Dr. Jennings makes about the design of the human brain, how it can be damaged and how it can be healed are profound. I don’t know of another book that so beautifully describes how our minds can be restored back to the way God originally designed them to be.” (Brad Cole, M.D., director of neuroscience education, Loma Linda University School of Medicine)

“Dr. Tim Jennings has asked the troublesome questions about God’s character and answered them in a simple and compelling way that clears away the lies about him so that you find yourself falling deeper in love with him. It’s a must-read for every inquiring mind. Once you understand the physiology of the brain and how it responds to love versus selfishness, as explained by Dr. Jennings, you will realize that the choice for love is the only one that will renew the mind and result in good mental health.” (Kay Kuzma, Ed.D., president of Family Matters Ministry)

“It has been said that our thoughts reflect who we are (Proverbs 23:7). Dr. Jennings challenges us with a synthesis of neurobiology and theology that elaborates on this concept.” (Michael Lyles, M.D., Lyles and Crawford Clinical Consulting)

“If you are ready to take your relationship with God to the next level, if you are ready to move closer to the source of all truth, if you are ready for an evidence-based approach to knowing God, this book is for you. Dr. Jennings’s patient cases and illustrations make complex ideas simple and easy to understand as he powerfully documents, through brain science, how our beliefs about God change us.” (Tim Clinton, president, American Association of Christian Counselors)

When I first ‘read’ the articulate manner in which Dr. Jennings credibly presented evidences and definitions that turned my 25 years of traditional christian belief upside down, you can imagine the incredible dissonance I experienced at such a paradigm shift. I could have hardened my heart and walked away in contempt of such "heresy," but I chose, instead, to weight the evidence for myself, examine what he presented, and come and reason it out with God. This process may take a few months or a few years as Holy Spirit rewires your brain and rids you of all the embedded traditional teachings you were told to believe about who God is, but if you choose to have an open, teachable mind, you will not believe the change in the way you treat others and how your relationship with God and others will deepen. Love will explode within you and you will not be able to stop it from spilling out to those around you. When you understand the way the brain works, neuro-chemically and at the cellular level, and how brain science reveals how even just our thoughts change us physically, you will look at your life’s choices, actions, and motivations in a whole new light and see how humanity’s sin-infection has damaged us beyond science’s and religion’s ability to fix. Jennings doesn’t leave you hanging there in utter hopelessness! He presents a picture of God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit who are ALL working TOGETHER to FIX and HEAL your mind BACK to the way They designed it to work! It really is that simple.

I hope this book turns mainstream Christendom upside down, because it certainly caused me to re-evaluate everything I was taught about God, his wrath, anger, vengeance, punishments, hell-fire, truth, love, and freedom.
There is a lot of good in this book, and for that I feel that I am in Dr. Timothy Jennings’s debt. However, I would have liked to find the good parts in a form that I could recommend even to the undiscerning reader. I think we really need more understanding of God as the one who goes out of his way to seek us and entice us (if you will) into re-establishing a relationship with him, a God who is essentially and passionately on our side, definitely not wanting to punish anyone or to see them perish ultimately. You will find this God in this book, but the book could have been so much better!

The style of the book is not what I could call dispassionate exposition. And so one wonders about its objectivity. It is highly rhetorical, even loaded with rhetorical questions which the Dr. Jennings obviously assumes that we will eagerly answer his way. Some of these I had to study for a while before I was sure which way he DID want me to answer them. I can understand why he would be enthusiastic over his topic, but he could have lowered the heat and been more effective.

Odd, isn’t it, that a book so heavy in theological themes should be "praised" exclusively by people in psychiatry and related professions? Couldn’t even one Bible scholar or recognized theologian be found who might have recommended this book to us? One problem this could have caused Dr. Jennings is that the discussion of how God didn’t kill anyone in the OT but simply laid them down to sleep in their graves and only does otherwise (?) since the resurrection of Jesus Christ is not only innovative but very unlikely to stand up under examination.

Human rights activist and coordinator of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine Frank Barat has brought together Noam Chomsky and the Israeli dissident historian Ilan Pappe for a follow up to their 2010 collaboration Gaza in Crisis. This time Barat has decided to change the format from being a collection of essays to a mix of interviews with both Chomsky and Pappe as well as individually authored essays.

Im not the greatest fan of the use of the interview format in book form (it works on radio/television: unfortunately places, bar marginal stations, where Pappe and Chomsky don’t get much if any airtime). Even for two authors as articulate and knowledgeable as Chomsky and Pappe undoubtedly are, the need to adlib produces a less direct and articulate text than the more studied and concise essays. Having both formats side by side in this edition clearly underlines that. Having said that the exchanges are still worthwhile reading with the differences in the two interviewees opinions on the merits of the one/two state solution, and the limitations of using the Apartheid experience to describe relations between the Israelis and the Palestinians, keeping it interesting.

Amongst the essays the highlight is Chomskys address to the United Nations General Assembly last year which is a succinct account of developments in Palestine/Israel between the so called Israeli withdrawl from Gaza and last years brutal assault on Gaza, and the US’s role as the perinally dishonest broker.

Book is hard to read as the chapters are VERY long, however there is some good information in this book.

I don’t like to read informational books especially professional text books. Usually the writers of the books fail to remember that those of us reading them are at the beginning level of the profession which makes them hard to read. This book however is easy to read, formatted, organized, and written well and has a lot of useful information for those going into a health profession management position.

This book was delivered promptly and in great shape. I look forward to keeping it in this condition so I can return it to for a nice chuck of change. always offers more money for my used books…….the catch is it comes in the form of a gift card. Regardless, I shop on here all the time so it works for me.

The will to meaning;

The will to meaning;: Foundations and applications of logotherapy Hardcover – 1969
Author: Viktor Emil Frankl ID: B0006BWB1Y

Review

“Perhaps the most significant thinking since Freud and Adler.”
– The American Journal of Psychiatry

“Frankl is one of the most famous and gifted of all psychiatrists… The incredible attempts to dehumanize man at Auschwitz and Dachau led Frankl to commence the humanization of psychiatry through logotherapy. Frankl is a professional who possesses the rare ability to write in a layman’s language.”
– Dr. Gerald F. Kreyche, Chairman

“I regard this book as one of the outstanding contributions to psychological thought in the last fifty years.”
– Dr. Carl Rogers

“Dr. Frankl’s contribution to psychotherapy has been great. He is perhaps the only non-behaviorist to have contributed a method to behavior therapy. The modesty with which he has put forward his important work has been remarkable.”
– Dr. Joseph Wolpe

Viktor Emil Frankl (1905-1997) was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist as well as a Holocaust survivor, as well as the founder of logotherapy, a form of existential psychotherapy. His most famous book (which also describes his experiences in the Holocaust) is Man’s Search for Meaning.

He states in the Preface to this 1969 book, "This book is the outcome of a series of lectures I was invited to give during the 1966 summer session … The particular task assigned to me at that time was to explain the system that characterizes logotherapy. While it has often been pointed out … that logotherapy … has developed a proper psycherapeutic technique … it also is the last psychotherapy that is conceptualized in a systematic way."

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"(L)ogotherapy is based on the following three concepts: (1) the freedom of the will; (2) the will to meaning; and (3) the meaning of life."
"After all, it is not the function of logotherapy to give answers. Its actual function is that of a catalyst."
"It is true that we logotherapists are convinced, and if need be, persuade our patients, that there is a meaning to fultill. But we do not pretend to know WHAT the meaning is."
"I personally believe that philosophy is not a mere sublimation of sex but rather that sex often serves as a cheap escape from precisely those philosophical and existential problems which beset man."
"What matters in life is rather to achieve something."
"Logotherapy does not cross the boundary between psychotherapy and religion.
