Author: Helen Zia
Published Date: 2019

“I have long been an admirer of Helen Zia’s writing and scholarship, but Last Boat Out of Shanghai is at a whole new level. It’s a true page-turner. Zia has proven once again that history is something that happens to real people. I stayed up late reading night after night, because I wanted to know what would happen to Benny, Ho, Bing, Annuo, and their friends and families.”—Lisa See, author of The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane   “Zia’s portraits are compassionate and heartbreaking, and they are, ultimately, the universal story of many families who leave their homeland as refugees and find less-than-welcoming circumstances on the other side. I read with a personal hunger to know the political and personal exigencies that led to those now-or-never decisions, for they mirror the story of my own mother, who also left on virtually the last boat out of Shanghai.”—Amy Tan, author of The Joy Luck Club   “A true tale of wartime savagery and difficult moral choices, rich in sweep and detail, this compelling saga is a Chinese Dr. Zhivago.”—James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers   “Gripping, magisterial, ambitious, and intimate, Last Boat Out of Shanghai not only depicts a cataclysmic century as it was lived and felt by four very different people, it keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way. What a tour de force!”—Gish Jen, author of The Girl at the Baggage Claim: Explaining the East-West Culture Gap   “Last Boat Out of Shanghai deftly weaves together the stories of Chinese displaced by political turmoil into a tapestry that celebrates human determination, resilience, and ingenuity.”—Stella Dong, author of Shanghai: The Rise and Fall of a Decadent City   “Impeccably researched and beautifully crafted . . . Zia offers a warmly human perspective on one of the most wrenching political transitions of the twentieth century.”—Elizabeth J. Perry, Henry Rosovsky Professor of Government at Harvard University and director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute   “War, foreign occupation, revolution, counterrevolution, exile, and new lives: the worst and best times of a remarkable population. Helen Zia tells their stories with clarity, understanding, and empathy. . . . Unforgettable and moving.”—Gordon H. Chang, professor of history and Olive H. Palmer Professor in Humanities, Stanford University Helen Zia is the author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People, a finalist for the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize (Bill Clinton referred to the book in two separate Rose Garden speeches). Zia is the co-author, with Wen Ho Lee, of My Country Versus Me: The First-Hand Account by the Los Alamos Scientist Who Was Falsely Accused of Being a Spy. She is also a former executive editor of Ms. magazine. A Fulbright Scholar, Zia first visited China in 1972, just after President Nixon’s historic trip. A graduate of Princeton University, she holds an honorary doctor of laws degree from the City University of New York School of Law and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The dramatic real life stories of four young people caught up in the mass exodus of Shanghai in the wake of China’s 1949 Communist revolution—a heartrending precursor to the struggles faced by emigrants today.

“A true page-turner . . . [Helen] Zia has proven once again that history is something that happens to real people.”—New York Times bestselling author Lisa See

Shanghai has historically been China’s jewel, its richest, most modern and westernized city. The bustling metropolis was home to sophisticated intellectuals, entrepreneurs, and a thriving middle class when Mao’s proletarian revolution emerged victorious from the long civil war. Terrified of the horrors the Communists would wreak upon their lives, citizens of Shanghai who could afford to fled in every direction. Seventy years later, members of the last generation to fully recall this massive exodus have revealed their stories to Chinese American journalist Helen Zia, who interviewed hundreds of exiles about their journey through one of the most tumultuous events of the twentieth century. From these moving accounts, Zia weaves together the stories of four young Shanghai residents who wrestled with the decision to abandon everything for an uncertain life as refugees in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States.

Benny, who as a teenager became the unwilling heir to his father’s dark wartime legacy, must decide either to escape to Hong Kong or navigate the intricacies of a newly Communist China. The resolute Annuo, forced to flee her home with her father, a defeated Nationalist official, becomes an unwelcome exile in Taiwan. The financially strapped Ho fights deportation from the U.S. in order to continue his studies while his family struggles at home. And Bing, given away by her poor parents, faces the prospect of a new life among strangers in America. The lives of these men and women are marvelously portrayed, revealing the dignity and triumph of personal survival.

Herself the daughter of immigrants from China, Zia is uniquely equipped to explain how crises like the Shanghai transition affect children and their families, students and their futures, and, ultimately, the way we see ourselves and those around us. Last Boat Out of Shanghai brings a poignant personal angle to the experiences of refugees then and, by extension, today.

“Zia’s portraits are compassionate and heartbreaking, and they are, ultimately, the universal story of many families who leave their homeland as refugees and find less-than-welcoming circumstances on the other side.”—Amy Tan, author of The Joy Luck Club

EXCELLENT What an amazing story, all true and so well written. If you feel sorry for yourself, read this book, and you'll think twice. It shows how people can survive and thrive, even during the very worst of times. This book makes you CARE about each person's journey. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Atlas of Poetic Botany (The MIT Press) Download

ISBN: 0262039125
Title: Atlas of Poetic Botany (The MIT Press) Pdf
Author: Francis Hallé
Published Date: 2018-11-02
Page: 128

beautifully designedThe author deserves that his words and drawings gain a large audience.Hallé presents his compelling descriptions and memories of some of the more remarkable ones, accompanied by his lovely sketches – far more effective than photographs, he believes, in capturing the reflection and “dialogue” necessary when “one stands face to face with an alien."Hallé sets playful stylized drawings explicating the strange behaviours, adaptations and coevolution of each species. It's a vegetal parade that reminds us, yet again, how some chunks of Earth's biosphere still smack of terra incognita. Its illustrations, drawn by the author, are as fascinating as the text....Hallé's passion for tropical botany is evident. He is fascinated not just by the trees, but by all the life connected to them....Reminded me once again of how important art is to botanical science.Lovely illustrated review of Atlas of Poetic Botany from BelleWood Gardens: "An affectionate look at the options and possibilities plants have developed to adapt and thrive in their jungle world. A fascinating look at the weird and wonderful variations in the plants of the equatorial tropical rain forests. His delightful descriptions of the plants ― which are written in an entertaining style based on his observations rather than in academic botanical terms ― make the book a page-turner.

Botanical encounters in the rainforest: trees that walk, a leaf as big as an awning, a plant that dances.

This Atlas invites the reader to tour the farthest reaches of the rainforest in search of exotic―poetic―plant life. Guided in these botanical encounters by Francis Hallé, who has spent forty years in pursuit of the strange and beautiful plant specimens of the rainforest, the reader discovers a plant with just one solitary, monumental leaf; an invasive hyacinth; a tree that walks; a parasitic laurel; and a dancing vine. Further explorations reveal the Rafflesia arnoldii, the biggest flower in the world, with a crown of stamens and pistils the color of rotten meat that exude the stench of garbage in the summer sun; underground trees with leaves that form a carpet on the ground above them; and the biggest tree in Africa, which can reach seventy meters (more tha 200 feet) in height, with a four-meter (about 13 feet) diameter. Hallé's drawings, many in color, provide a witty accompaniment.

Like any good tour guide, Hallé tells stories to illustrate his facts. Readers learn about, among other things, Queen Victoria's rubber tree; legends of the moabi tree (for example, that powder from the bark confers invisibility); a flower that absorbs energy from a tree; plants that imitate other plants; a tree that rains; and a fern that clones itself.

Hallé's drawings represent an investment in time that returns a dividend of wonder more satisfying than the ephemeral thrill afforded by the photograph. The Atlas of Poetic Botany allows us to be amazed by forms of life that seem as strange as visitors from another planet.

Beautiful and educational Wow. The drawings are exquisite. The writing is poetic, yet factual. A botany book for plant lovers, artists, and writers.

The previous edition of this book was titled LSAT Premier 2016-2017 with Real Practice Questions.

It feels like this is written for a high schooler I've been purchasing several LSAT review materials for a few months now, casually reading them and planning to sit in another year or so.My main criticism of this book is that it is needlessly long. It takes 972 pages to do a comparable job to other 400-500 page books. The book assumes a lower baseline of the reader, where other review materials have a more accurate baseline for someone considering a 6 figure, life-defining decision. It feels like this is written for a high schooler, not a third year college student.I would much more readily recommend Princeton Review's "Cracking the LSAT", the LSAT Bible Trilogy, and official LSAC decommissioned LSAT tests of years prior. If I could do it again, I would recommend purchasing, for ~$25, one of the "10 Actual, Official LSAT Preptests". This is one of the few materials released by the commission that administers the LSAT. Be advised that the older tests seem to be a bit more difficult. Read through the questions and casually review them to get a feel for the test, no need to time yourself yet. Get a feel for what the test is about, and then sharpen your skills through the aforementioned review books. There's no need for this book, it takes twice as long to do the same job.Kaplan's LSAT Unlocked for 2018-2019 Kaplan is one of the biggest names in career testing. I’ve used them for the Series 7 as well as other licensing tests and found them to be one of the best resources out there.I passed the LSAT over 20 years ago using a Princeton Review study guide. Now my son is now studying for the LSAT and using this guide from Kaplan. The study material is very good but lacking the multiple tests my previous reviews had. Unfortunately, the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) has limited the number of practice exams Kaplan and other test prep organizations can provide. As a result, you only get one full length exam instead of the six from past years. Kaplan does, however, provide hundreds of sample questions as well as the logic and theory behind each. Once you understand how the questions are structured and the method for solving its questions, the rest is practice, practice, practice. With that in mind, they provide a list of multiple other resources to help you in your studies, including access to .With the exception of multiple tests, Kaplan’s LSAT book has everything else you’ll need if you’re prepared for a few months of disciplined self-study. The provide a great outline to help manage your study schedule – one for 6+ weeks, 5, weeks, and 2-3 weeks. If you use this guide with the other tools available, they do a good job of teaching you how to think – not just answer questions. Yes, drilling on a ton of questions is how I did it – you become familiar with how questions are asked and what to look for when answering – but knowing the “why” is just as helpful.Instead of providing sample questions all lumped together, each chapter is broken down to highlight the different range of questions – logic, reasoning, logic games, assumptions, and non-argument questions. Each sample question has an analysis next to is explaining the reasoning steps on how to find the answer instead of just revealing the answer. If you’re looking for further tests, you can go back to 2015 and earlier versions for additional sample tests on which to drill.Questions, quizzes, and the perfect 180 When I was graduating from college, I took the LSAT without studying and got a pretty good score, which motivated me to apply to Stanford and Harvard Law, both of which rejected me. A few years later, I took the LSAT again, this time achieving a near-perfect score but with the same results at SLS and HLS, probably because my GPA was admittedly mediocre.Time passed, and still law school remained a dream. A few years ago I decided to give it another try, but for my third time around I studied like crazy, those innate test-taking skills having mostly evaporated in the course of everyday life. I got a decent but not great score, and blew right past HLS and SLS to apply to lower-tier schools. I was accepted by three, but for various reasons could not make that jump.I've still got law school on the radar, foolish as that may sound, and there's nothing better to keep my brain in LSAT shape than the Kaplan guides. They give you exposure to all types of questions, along with throughout explanations -- the logic games used to be my favorite and now they flummox me the most -- and I also like the access to the online tools. Plus studying for the LSAT is a much more gratifying brain-sharpening exercise than completing Sudoku or crossword puzzles.Boys and girls, don't follow my example. Earn As in every course. Get this book. Take the LSAT. Go to the best school that will accept you. Whatever you choose to do with your life, you'll have had that training...and maybe, fewer regrets.
