I’m a librarian and do a lot of reading. I also consider myself to be quite liberal and open-minded. I am also an abuse survivor, a fact which comes into play here.

A colleague of mine handed me this book, since she knows of my love for historical fiction. And I must agree, I was hooked immediately. The imagery is lush, the characters intriguing, the history of the Highlands absorbing. I found Claire to be an independent, intelligent woman and Jamie a brutish if not lovable man. Then I came to a part about 200+ pages in ******SPOILER ALERT****** where, after trying to get back to the place where she was originally swept back in time, so she could return to her husband, Claire is captured by the English troops. She is placed in another precarious situation with the sadistic Captain Randall, and Jamie literally swoops in to save her. High adventure all around, and they do escape. But what follows afterwards is Jamie’s decision to beat Claire with his sword belt. Claire puts up a fight but is no match for the large Scotsman and is beaten so much that she cannot sit or ride a horse for days. Gabaldon has Claire go through a deep moment of introspection where she realizes she is indeed impetuous and has been careless of the people in this time and of their land and ways…in this way, then, the beating is justified, and might even be seen as romantic and passionate as of course, Jamie and Claire make up afterward.

This incident may not bother some, but I would just like to post a warning to women who have suffered any sort of abuse (physical, sexual or otherwise) or trauma. I feel betrayed somehow and am not sure if I can continue reading the novel after this.

I get a new version of this reference book every year. I like having this in my lab coat, because it has several distinct advantages over a pharmacy app. First, its just faster to look things up in this book. I have races with the residents to prove it to them. By the time you get your phone out, get on the wifi (cell service is awful in the hospital) and get the app running, I have all the information.

Among the other big advantages, is that it shows the drugs in relation to its class. Patient can’t afford that new ARB? Look at the other ones in that section to see if there is one that’s cheaper! It also has dosing instructions (with peds instructions!), major side effects, and off label uses which is something the apps never seem to provide. It also has numerous useful tables, such as dermatomes, QTc prolongating meds and the like.

As mentioned by another reviewer, the formatting has changed this year. I don’t think the print is smaller, but the margins have increased in size or something. It has gained over 100 pages in thickness, which is quite a bit from its normal growth.

Overall, its one of my essential books where I always buy the latest edition.

Great reference, but bigger, heavier, also some tables printed so small-they are hard to read. Last years book was better.

Always love these books. I work in a walk in clinic. This book is invaluable. However , I am very unhappy with the font size of the pediatric out patient meds chart. What a disappointment to spend the extra money on the larger version and important chart msmall

Written in 1971, `Fear and Loathing’ still has a powerful impact on the mind even today. If you are easily offended by gratuitous drug usage and the craziness resulting from it, then put the book down and back away slowly. For those who may have perhaps saw the movie with Johnny Depp and did not know what to think of it, I highly recommend reading the book and then watching the movie again, its subtleties come out from the background provided in the book, and you will truly appreciate the performances afterwards.

`Fear’ is absolutely hilarious, following the ramblings of a journalist and his attorney into Las Vegas in the early years. Through clouds of mescaline, acid, ether, amyl, tequila, rum, and pot, we see Las Vegas through the demented eyes of a person totally over the edge and bordering on drug induced psychosis.

The bar scene in Circus-Circus is worth the price of the book alone, and all of the vapid trippings of our dynamic duo are practically frightening in their intensity. Thompson has captured the mind of the delusional manic in `Fear’, and while it is a journey not recommended for real life, in its book form it is highly entertaining and brutally funny.

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas may be dated in its use of drugs and money, and the picture painted of a Las Vegas strip long gone to the commercialism of today’s Vegas, but the amusing underlying story of human nature of the edge of reason is timeless. Definitely a worthwhile muse to entertain yourself with. Enjoy!

Hunter Thompson drove to Las Vegas to report on a motorcycle race and ended up writing a story about himself writing a story about a motorcycle race. If he would have written a conventional report on motorcycle racing it would have been interesting to motorcycle enthusiasts for a few days. Since he wrote a gonzo story he had a very wide canvas and he used it well to create a classic.

The reader might be turned off by the obstreperous behavior, extreme self indulgence and offensive inconsiderate language. If you can look past this offensive conduct and you will see that Hunter Thompson gave us an insight into the American character of the 1970’s.

This is an indispensable reference book. I use it daily. I recently upgraded to this most recent version. I have had it about 3 weeks. I went to look up quinine today and couldn’t find the Q’s. Then I had a brief moment of disbelief and I recited the alphabet to myself to make sure I wasn’t missing something. Then, I noticed my copy skipped from page 1376 to page 1425! Fortunately I can still exchange the book, but beware….count your pages when you get this book.

Otherwise, great book. And the included CD-ROM provides a little extra searching power. I would prefer that the CD interface and printouts were a little cleaner.

The Merk Index is an essential reference book for chemists. During my entire career working in the research and development of analytical chemistry methods for pharmaceuticals, there always was a copy of The Merk Index in the laboratory. Usually, I had my own copy of an earlier edition on my own bookshelf, over my desk. I cannot imagine starting a new method development project without, first, looking for any pertinent information that might be in The Merk Index.

As a chemical engineering researcher, the Merck Index has been with me my entire career. Anyone out there who is remotely involved with biopharmaceuticals, galvanized plating, trigonal planar Lithium hydride battery formulations, or just plain ole kitchen cabinet cleaners. The Merck Index is your sole go to reference source for arriving to the heart of the chemistry rapidly. Researchers typically let their imaginations wander in the dark cave of molecular research frontiers and the Merck Index is their safe flashlight of known reactivities and quantities.
