The target is royal

The game is revenge

Gabriel Allon returns in the summer's hottest thriller, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Daniel Silva.

Stretched topless upon the foredeck, drink in hand, her flawless skin baking in the sun, was the most famous woman in the world. And one deck below, preparing an appetizer of tuna tartare, cucumber, and pineapple, was the man who was going to kill her. . . .

She is an iconic member of the British Royal Family, beloved for her beauty and charitable works, resented by her former husband and his mother, the Queen of England. But when a bomb explodes aboard her holiday yacht, British intelligence turns to one man to track down her killer: legendary spy and assassin Gabriel Allon.

Gabriel's target is Eamon Quinn, a master bomb maker and mercenary of death who sells his services to the highest bidder. Quinn is an elusive man of the shadows—"a whisper in a half-lit chapel, a loose thread at the hem of a discarded garment"—but fortunately Gabriel does not pursue him alone. At his side is Christopher Keller, a British commando turned professional assassin who knows Quinn's murderous handiwork all too well.

The English Spy moves at light speed from the glamorous island of Saint Barthélemy to the mean streets of West Belfast to a cottage atop the cliffs of Cornwall that Gabriel holds dear. And though he does not realize it, he is stalking an old enemy—a cabal of evil that wants nothing more than to see him dead. Gabriel will find it necessary to oblige them, for when a man is out for vengeance, death has its distinct advantages.

Filled with breathtaking twists, The English Spy will hold readers spellbound from its riveting opening passages to its heart-stopping conclusion. It is a timely reminder that there are some men in the world who will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. And it proves once again why Daniel Silva is regarded as his generation's finest writer of international thrillers.

The English Spy is another multi-layered utterly riveting book from Daniel Silva, who is as knowledgable about his subject matter as he is deft in telling us the story. The English Spy, the fifteenth book in the Gabriel Allon series is set in a potpourri of cities – virtually all the sites of previous adventures – only a few months after the end of "The Heist." the previous Allon adventure. By doing this, the clever and witty Mr. Silva is buying both us and his main character, Gabriel Allon time before he must leave the field and take over The Office. As a result, we see relatively little of the lovely and intriguing Mrs. Allon, Chiara, who is heavily pregnant with twins conceived two books back, but to make up for her absence, we are reunited with an array of characters good and bad from previous stories.
There are twists and turns galore, and with gore, and what you think you are seeing as you read may not be what you’ve got a few pages further in. Yes, the English Spy is Christopher Keller, who has become a reader favorite, but even the title can be interpreted in more ways than one. Even the opening series of events, though sensational and attention grabbing, is somewhat misleading, especially if the reader thinks this book is going to be about an unhappy English princess. It is not, and before jumping to conclusions, we would do well to think of another much loved British Royal who did die in a boat explosion and not in a car crash in a tunnel in Paris.
We also see less of Gabriel’s well meshed "Office" team, and more of some old friends and many dangerous enemies from the first fourteen books, but Allon and Keller are an awesome team for which no evil doer can be a match on a permanent basis.
Once again Daniel Silva has shown us that he is a master of espionage thrillers. This is #15 in the Gabriel Allon series and I am always fascinated how top writers are able to maintain the quality and momentum of a series. Silva has done this in a masterly way by bringing together a collection of characters and events from some of his previous books and built them into a riveting thriller.

Israeli spymaster Gabriel Allon is facing two major hurdles in his life, one he is looking forward to and one he isn’t. Soon he will become a father again – his wife Chiara is carrying twins. Then he will be forced to become head of "The Office" and no longer be called to work in the field. He reflects that "the life of a professional spy is one of constant travel, mind-numbing boredom broken by interludes of sheer terror".

Before either happens he has to hunt down master Irish bombmaker Eamon Quinn who not only killed and maimed hundreds in Northern Ireland but after a spell of training in Libya, has spread his death and destruction around the world, including the Middle East. Quinn’s latest mayhem was a contract for the destruction of a luxury private yacht/cruiser in the Caribbean to assassinate a royal princess (loosely and insensitively modelled on Princess Diana).

On learning that Quinn was the bomber Gabriel sets out find him and find out who he is working for. He recruits Christopher Keller to help him – a former British commando who knows Quinn too well from painful experience in Northern Ireland. The experience was so painful that he has spent the last few years in exile in Corsica working as a professional assassin.
Those who have followed Gabriel Allon’s career since he first appeared in "The Kill Artist" know what to expect from a Daniel Silva novel: 1. It will be long, probably exceeding five hundred pages. 2. Although Gabriel is weary of bloodshed, he will be dragged back into the fray to carry out perilous operations against his enemies. 3. The author will explore themes about the politics of the Middle East and Russia. 4. Allon’s associates from the Office (Israeli intelligence) will appear in supporting roles. 5. There will be allusions to key events that occurred earlier in order to keep new readers in the loop. 6. Most of the action will take place in such European countries as Italy, England, Germany, and France.

"The English Spy" meets most of these expectations, and Silva adds other elements into the mix. Eamon Quinn is a criminal mastermind who was once a member of the IRA. He commits a series of atrocities that propel Allon to team up with former SAS commando Christopher Keller to bring Quinn down. Keller and Allon both have personal reasons for wanting to stop this brutal psychopath in his tracks. In the words of the British prime minister: "Sometimes revenge is good for the soul."

The story is so intricate that a spreadsheet would be useful to keep track of the large cast of characters and their myriad activities. We learn about Ireland’s "Troubles," terrorist training camps, and the many ways in which agents try to gain leverage over their targets. Allon and Keller use every means at their disposal to locate Quinn before he slaughters even more innocent people. Meanwhile, important officials in the Russian, Israeli, and British governments are nervously monitoring developments.

The God-Shaped Brain

The God-Shaped Brain: How Changing Your View of God Transforms Your Life Audio CD – Audiobook, CD, Unabridged
Author: Visit ‘s Timothy R. Jennings Page ID: 1610458362

Review

“Paying attention to the findings of neuroscience is tantamount to paying attention to God’s creation. And doing that leads us―with the proper guide―to God’s story and his intentions for us. Tim Jennings is that proper guide. An experienced healer with a palpable spirit of humility, he takes the reader past the trite, superficial motifs of easy spirituality that clutter our emotional landscapes and grounds you first in the nature of the God of Scripture. He then further explores that in which God grounded the first humans―the body, and namely, the brain. With compelling stories of challenge and transformation, Dr. Jennings deftly weaves together a deeply thoughtful theology of the living Word with the complex nature of the organ that our heart calls home. Read this book to know God more fully. Read this book to know your brain more fully. And see how knowing God will change your brain―and your life―in ways you never thought possible.” (Curt Thompson, M.D., psychiatrist and author of Anatomy of the Soul)

“With amazing clarity, Dr. Jennings cuts through the many divergent God constructs to expose the powerful impact these differing views have upon our brains and bodies. Not everything taught about God is healthy―read this book and learn how your belief about God is changing you.” (Gregory L. Jantz, Ph.D., C.E.D.S., founder, The Center, Inc.)

“What makes this book truly remarkable is the artful way Dr. Jennings combines the latest understanding in brain physiology with practical and compelling real-life stories. Although this book is easy to understand for the layperson, the implications Dr. Jennings makes about the design of the human brain, how it can be damaged and how it can be healed are profound. I don’t know of another book that so beautifully describes how our minds can be restored back to the way God originally designed them to be.” (Brad Cole, M.D., director of neuroscience education, Loma Linda University School of Medicine)

“Dr. Tim Jennings has asked the troublesome questions about God’s character and answered them in a simple and compelling way that clears away the lies about him so that you find yourself falling deeper in love with him. It’s a must-read for every inquiring mind. Once you understand the physiology of the brain and how it responds to love versus selfishness, as explained by Dr. Jennings, you will realize that the choice for love is the only one that will renew the mind and result in good mental health.” (Kay Kuzma, Ed.D., president of Family Matters Ministry)

“It has been said that our thoughts reflect who we are (Proverbs 23:7). Dr. Jennings challenges us with a synthesis of neurobiology and theology that elaborates on this concept.” (Michael Lyles, M.D., Lyles and Crawford Clinical Consulting)

“If you are ready to take your relationship with God to the next level, if you are ready to move closer to the source of all truth, if you are ready for an evidence-based approach to knowing God, this book is for you. Dr. Jennings’s patient cases and illustrations make complex ideas simple and easy to understand as he powerfully documents, through brain science, how our beliefs about God change us.” (Tim Clinton, president, American Association of Christian Counselors)

When I first ‘read’ the articulate manner in which Dr. Jennings credibly presented evidences and definitions that turned my 25 years of traditional christian belief upside down, you can imagine the incredible dissonance I experienced at such a paradigm shift. I could have hardened my heart and walked away in contempt of such "heresy," but I chose, instead, to weight the evidence for myself, examine what he presented, and come and reason it out with God. This process may take a few months or a few years as Holy Spirit rewires your brain and rids you of all the embedded traditional teachings you were told to believe about who God is, but if you choose to have an open, teachable mind, you will not believe the change in the way you treat others and how your relationship with God and others will deepen. Love will explode within you and you will not be able to stop it from spilling out to those around you. When you understand the way the brain works, neuro-chemically and at the cellular level, and how brain science reveals how even just our thoughts change us physically, you will look at your life’s choices, actions, and motivations in a whole new light and see how humanity’s sin-infection has damaged us beyond science’s and religion’s ability to fix. Jennings doesn’t leave you hanging there in utter hopelessness! He presents a picture of God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit who are ALL working TOGETHER to FIX and HEAL your mind BACK to the way They designed it to work! It really is that simple.

I hope this book turns mainstream Christendom upside down, because it certainly caused me to re-evaluate everything I was taught about God, his wrath, anger, vengeance, punishments, hell-fire, truth, love, and freedom.
There is a lot of good in this book, and for that I feel that I am in Dr. Timothy Jennings’s debt. However, I would have liked to find the good parts in a form that I could recommend even to the undiscerning reader. I think we really need more understanding of God as the one who goes out of his way to seek us and entice us (if you will) into re-establishing a relationship with him, a God who is essentially and passionately on our side, definitely not wanting to punish anyone or to see them perish ultimately. You will find this God in this book, but the book could have been so much better!

The style of the book is not what I could call dispassionate exposition. And so one wonders about its objectivity. It is highly rhetorical, even loaded with rhetorical questions which the Dr. Jennings obviously assumes that we will eagerly answer his way. Some of these I had to study for a while before I was sure which way he DID want me to answer them. I can understand why he would be enthusiastic over his topic, but he could have lowered the heat and been more effective.

Odd, isn’t it, that a book so heavy in theological themes should be "praised" exclusively by people in psychiatry and related professions? Couldn’t even one Bible scholar or recognized theologian be found who might have recommended this book to us? One problem this could have caused Dr. Jennings is that the discussion of how God didn’t kill anyone in the OT but simply laid them down to sleep in their graves and only does otherwise (?) since the resurrection of Jesus Christ is not only innovative but very unlikely to stand up under examination.

One problem this could have caused Dr. Jennings is that the discussion of how God didn’t kill anyone in the OT but simply laid them down to sleep in their graves and only does otherwise (?) since the resurrection of Jesus Christ is not only innovative but very unlikely to stand up under examination.

Human rights activist and coordinator of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine Frank Barat has brought together Noam Chomsky and the Israeli dissident historian Ilan Pappe for a follow up to their 2010 collaboration Gaza in Crisis. This time Barat has decided to change the format from being a collection of essays to a mix of interviews with both Chomsky and Pappe as well as individually authored essays.

Im not the greatest fan of the use of the interview format in book form (it works on radio/television: unfortunately places, bar marginal stations, where Pappe and Chomsky don’t get much if any airtime). Even for two authors as articulate and knowledgeable as Chomsky and Pappe undoubtedly are, the need to adlib produces a less direct and articulate text than the more studied and concise essays. Having both formats side by side in this edition clearly underlines that. Having said that the exchanges are still worthwhile reading with the differences in the two interviewees opinions on the merits of the one/two state solution, and the limitations of using the Apartheid experience to describe relations between the Israelis and the Palestinians, keeping it interesting.

Amongst the essays the highlight is Chomskys address to the United Nations General Assembly last year which is a succinct account of developments in Palestine/Israel between the so called Israeli withdrawl from Gaza and last years brutal assault on Gaza, and the US’s role as the perinally dishonest broker.

Book is hard to read as the chapters are VERY long, however there is some good information in this book.

I don’t like to read informational books especially professional text books. Usually the writers of the books fail to remember that those of us reading them are at the beginning level of the profession which makes them hard to read. This book however is easy to read, formatted, organized, and written well and has a lot of useful information for those going into a health profession management position.

This book was delivered promptly and in great shape. I look forward to keeping it in this condition so I can return it to for a nice chuck of change. always offers more money for my used books…….the catch is it comes in the form of a gift card. Regardless, I shop on here all the time so it works for me.
